How to Choose PE Backsheet Film for Hygiene Products

Selecting the right PE backsheet film is one of the most consequential decisions a hygiene product manufacturer makes. The film is the outermost layer of a diaper, sanitary napkin, or adult incontinence product — it's what the end consumer sees and touches. Get the specification wrong and you face leakage complaints, production line stoppages, or costly reformulations.

1. GSM: The Foundation of Film Performance

GSM (grams per square metre) is the single most important specification. It determines the film's weight, strength, and cost per unit. For hygiene applications, typical ranges are:

• Baby diapers: 14–22 GSM — lightweight for softness, but strong enough to prevent leakage
• Sanitary napkins: 12–20 GSM — thinner films for discretion and comfort
• Adult incontinence: 18–30 GSM — heavier films for higher fluid volumes
• Underpads and medical: 20–40 GSM — maximum barrier performance

A common mistake is specifying the lowest GSM to reduce cost. Films that are too light fail tensile and peel strength tests, leading to delamination on the production line. Work with your supplier to find the minimum GSM that still passes your quality thresholds.

2. Film Width and Roll Dimensions

Your converting equipment dictates the maximum film width you can process. Most modern hygiene converting lines accept widths up to 2400mm, but older equipment may be limited to 1600mm or less.

Key dimensions to specify:

• Slit width — the width of each individual roll after slitting
• Core diameter — typically 76mm or 152mm (3" or 6")
• Roll OD (outer diameter) — affects how many linear metres fit per roll
• Linear metres per roll — directly impacts your production efficiency

Always request a dimensional tolerance sheet from your supplier. A ±2mm width tolerance is standard; anything wider causes tracking issues on high-speed lines.

3. ASTM Testing: The Non-Negotiables

Any credible PE film supplier should be able to provide test certificates against these ASTM standards:

WVTR is particularly critical for non-breathable films. A value above 0.5 g/m²/24h means the film is allowing moisture vapour to pass through — which defeats the purpose of a barrier backsheet entirely.

4. Surface Treatment and Printability

Most hygiene backsheet films require corona treatment to achieve adequate surface energy for adhesive bonding and printing. Specify a minimum dyne level of 38–42 dynes/cm depending on your adhesive system.

If you're printing the film, confirm the supplier's corona treatment is consistent across the full roll width. Uneven treatment causes ink adhesion failures at the edges — a common quality complaint that's easy to miss in incoming inspection.

5. Embossing Options

Embossed films provide a cloth-like texture that improves the perceived softness of the finished product. Common patterns include diamond emboss, micro-emboss, and flat (no emboss). Embossing slightly reduces tensile strength, so ensure your supplier's test data reflects the embossed specification.

6. Evaluating a Supplier: Five Questions to Ask

1. What is your production capacity and lead time? A supplier running at 95% capacity cannot accommodate your surge orders.
2. How do you handle batch-to-batch consistency? Request COA data from at least 10 consecutive batches.
3. What is your minimum order quantity? Some suppliers require large MOQs that tie up working capital.
4. Do you offer free samples for qualification? Any serious supplier will provide samples for your line trials.
5. What is your quality rejection process? Understand the claims procedure before you need it.
